What Is Isometric Dot Paper?

Isometric dot paper places a small dot at every corner of a triangular lattice. Rows are spaced at sin 60° of the dot spacing, and alternate rows shift by half a step, so every dot has six equidistant neighbours. Connect any dot to a neighbour and your pencil is automatically travelling along one of the three isometric axes — straight up, or 30° up-left and up-right. That is the same geometry as lined isometric paper, with one big difference: there are no printed lines to compete with your drawing. The sheet is sometimes called isometric dot grid paper or simply 3D dot paper, and isometric dot paper is the standard choice when the finished sketch, not the grid, should be the star of the page.

How to Draw on Isometric Dot Paper

Pick any dot on the isometric dot paper. Count the same number of dots up-right and up-left, then close the diamond — that is the top face of a cube. Drop equal vertical edges from the three lowest corners of the diamond and connect them, and the cube is done. Because you count dots instead of measuring, every edge comes out the same length without a ruler, and stacking or cutting cubes is just more counting.
